Walking in Serra da Estrela

Lose yourself among the clouds on a stimulating walk through the Serra da Estrela mountains.

You can climb up to the highest point in mainland Portugal, at an altitude of 2,000 metres, in the heart of the country’s largest protected area.

And with a network of footpaths extending over 375 kilometres, you’re bound to find one that is suited to your level of fitness.

High up in the mountains of the Serra da Estrela, marvel at the group of lakes formed by glacial movement that are like mirrors of water. In the middle of your walk, you’ll come across the source of the River Mondego, the longest river flowing entirely on Portuguese territory. Look out for the river beaches, as there are many of them in the region, and they’re perfect places to take a break.

In the typical mountain villages, you sample some of the local delicacies. Try the river trout, grilled or stuffed with smoked ham, the famous cured goat’s cheese, better known as Queijo da Serra, and the tasty regional dessert of curd cheese and honey.
